Hospitals are so sterile! James Van Der Beek, his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and more celebrity couples have welcomed their babies at home over the years.
Kimberly gave birth to baby No. 5 in the comfort of her and the Dawson’s Creek alum’s bedroom in June 2018. The actor shared a photo of the post-birth scene and titled it “Home-Birth Realness.”
“Word of caution, if you’re squeamish, just double-tap and move on,” the Connecticut native, who shares Olivia, Joshua, Emilia, Annabel and Gwendolyn with the former consultant, wrote via Instagram at the time. “Messy bed. Plastic sheeting underneath old sheets. Old towel crumpled on the floor. Vomit bag (unused). Inflatable birthing tub (also unused). Shirtless Dad. Boy in Spider-Man pajamas. Happy, healthy baby. Happy, healthy Mom in her own shower right after giving birth. Water bottle. And … placenta in a mixing bowl. (I warned you).”
Not every celeb’s home birth has been intentional, however. In July 2019, Bachelor in Paradise’s Jade Roper gave birth to her baby boy Brooks in her closet.
“I got in the bath just to relax and we were going to go to the hospital [but] all of a sudden, the labor contractions sped up and got so intense,” the Bachelor alum told Entertainment Tonight the following month. “I remember walking by the mirror and looking at my face and the change of my body … and I was like, ‘This is serious.’ The moment I realized that we weren’t going to make it to the hospital, I was, like, screaming. It took my pain to a whole other level because it became fear. … I’m, like, hunched over, clenching this bench, [my husband], Tanner [Tolbert] is calling 911 and [the paramedics] got there in six minutes.”

Tolbert chimed in, “I could see the whole head [before they came]. He was crowning. I was there by myself [and saw] a head of hair, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, this is actually going to happen.’”
Roper experienced postpartum PTSD after the emergency birth, describing her “flashbacks” and “intrusive thoughts” during a May 2021 Today show appearance. After breaking down to the Bachelorette alum, she sought hypnotherapy help.
